Deoria Tal Trek — The Mirror Lake with Chaukhamba Views
If you are on the Kedarnath route and have a spare day between Rudraprayag and Guptkashi, do not miss Deoria Tal — one of the most effortlessly beautiful high-altitude lakes in Uttarakhand. A moderate 3 km trek from Sari village rewards you with a shimmering lake that perfectly mirrors the Chaukhamba massif (7,138 m) on still mornings — creating one of the most iconic Himalayan photographs in India. Where is Deoria Tal? Deoria Tal (2,438 m) is located near Ukhimath in Rudraprayag district. The nearest road point is Sari Village — 14 km from Ukhimath, which is accessible from Rudraprayag (45 km).

The trek from Sari to the lake is just 3 km through dense oak and rhododendron forest. Distance and Difficulty
  • Trek distance: 3 km one way (6 km return)
  • Altitude: 2,438 m
  • Difficulty: Easy — suitable for families with children
  • Time: 1.5–2 hours uphill; 1–1.5 hours downhill
The Magic Mirror Reflection On calm mornings (best before 8 AM), the Chaukhamba peaks (part of the Gangotri group) reflect perfectly in Deoria Tal's still surface — creating a mirror effect that is genuinely breathtaking. By mid-morning, when wind picks up, the reflection disappears. Arriving at the lake at sunrise is essential for this experience. This means either camping at the lake the night before, or staying in Sari village and starting the trek by 5 AM. Camping Options at the Lake Several camping operators set up tents near the lake. A night at Deoria Tal — with the stars above and the darkened silhouette of the Chaukhamba peaks — followed by sunrise over the mirror lake is one of the most memorable experiences the Garhwal Himalayas offer. Camping cost: ₹2,000–₹4,000 per person including meals. How to Reach Sari Village
  • From Rudraprayag: 45 km via Ukhimath (1.5–2 hours)
  • From Guptkashi: 35 km via Ukhimath (1–1.5 hours)
  • Sari village has a small parking area; private vehicles or shared taxis from Ukhimath
Combining with Chopta and Tungnath The ideal 2-day extension from the Kedarnath route: Day 1 — Deoria Tal (night camp). Day 2 — Return to Sari, drive to Chopta (25 km), trek to Tungnath temple. Return to Guptkashi in the evening.
